Meet the Barkers

Barker Brothers is a family run business - now in 4th generation of Barkers and family is at the heart of everything we do.

Stuart has been working in the family business since he was 14 and now runs the shop with the help of an excellent team of butchers.

He’s also joined by his brother and hopes to encourage his sons and daughter to take over the business one day!

Along with generations of the Barkers family taking on the running of the business - from Stanley Barker to David and now Stuart - the Butchers shop has also taken on many changes and refurbishments over the years.

Originally located in Stapleford, our location changed to Shelford in 1947 to the shop we’re still in today. However the shop as it stands today is nearly unrecognisable!

What once was a single doorway and a single counter is now expanded into a double fronted, open planned shop with a large counter and display area.

The shop now focuses around welcoming the community and being transparent in the way meat is prepared and presented so that customers can always see the care and attention we place on providing the best quality meat and veg.

The history of our butchers.

Our heritage and Cambridge roots are very important to us. Thanks to decades of loyal and local customers, Barker Bros has prospered and continued to grow into the shop we are so proud to have today.

Established in 1843, still going strong.

We have a strong heritage in providing the people of Cambridge with quality and fresh produce. in fact, local records show that butchery has been in the Barker family as far back as 1843. That's over 150 years of history and counting!

Records are a bit sketchy but apparently, according to local magistrates documents from that year, brass weights were stolen from the butchers shop and the culprits were apprehended and sent to Australia! Although this is the earliest recorded reference to the shop, it is more than likely that Barkers was established well before this date.
